Scott White founded White & Associates in 1997 (now White Luing Law) after beginning his legal career in 1990. Over more than three decades of practice, he established himself as a respected and accomplished criminal defense attorney, known for his unwavering commitment to vindicating the wrongfully accused and for his skillful advocacy in and out of the courtroom.
From the beginning, Scott built his practice around the belief that every client deserves respect, dignity, and a strong advocate—especially during life’s most difficult moments. His calm presence, strategic approach, and deep sense of justice shaped not only the outcomes of his cases, but the culture and values of the firm that continues today.
Scott has since passed leadership of the firm to partners Madison White and Marissa Luing, while continuing to play an important role as a mentor to the attorneys at White Luing Law. Though he is now enjoying a well-earned retirement, he remains a steady source of wisdom, guidance, and support for the firm he built.
Scott earned his law degree from Hamline University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has been happily married for over 30 years and is the proud father of two wonderful children. In retirement, he enjoys traveling, golfing, fly fishing, and spending time up north at his cabin.

Since joining White Luing Law in 2017, Attorney Marissa Luing has grown her practice and now serves as a partner at the firm. Her practice focuses on criminal defense and estate planning, where she provides thoughtful, strategic representation to clients facing a wide range of legal challenges. Marissa is a dedicated advocate for those navigating criminal charges and takes pride in guiding estate planning clients through the important process of preparing for the future and protecting their families.
Marissa is known for her compassionate, client-centered approach. She understands that legal matters can be overwhelming and often life-changing, and she works to ensure each client feels heard, informed, and supported every step of the way. She is deeply committed to the firm’s mission of helping clients seek justice and move forward with confidence.
Outside of her legal practice, Marissa enjoys traveling, gardening, and kayaking on the Mississippi River. She is always looking for new restaurant recommendations and places to explore. Marissa lives in Otsego with her husband and their animals—where the cats run the household, the dog does his best to maintain order, and the chickens simply add to the chaos. She earned her law degree from the University of St. Thomas School of Law.

Madison White grew up watching her father build White Luing Law and dedicate his career to seeking justice for his clients. Inspired by his work and values, she always knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She officially joined the firm in 2020 and is now a partner at White Luing Law.
Madison is a compassionate and supportive advocate for those she represents. Understanding the emotional toll and impact legal matters can have, she strives to be there with her clients through challenging times. She is a champion of the firm’s mission, as she is dedicated to seeking justice and empowering clients as they navigate the legal system.
Outside of the office, Madison enjoys spending time with her spouse, their very energetic black lab, Dakota, and family and friends. Dakota keeps things lively and ensures there’s never a dull moment. Madison also loves baking, hiking, and traveling whenever she gets the chance. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Badgers!) and her law degree from Mitchell Hamline School of Law.

Attorney Patrick Downing joined the firm in March 2026. He focuses his practice on family law, representing clients in matters involving dissolution, child support, custody, and related issues. As an associate attorney, he works closely with parents and spouses to navigate emotionally complex situations, helping them reach practical, forward-looking resolutions while remaining prepared to advocate in court when necessary. Prior to joining the firm, Patrick was a general practitioner working primarily in family law, giving him a broad foundation in resolving disputes both inside and outside the courtroom.
Patrick is committed to minimizing unnecessary conflict during what is often one of the most difficult periods in a client’s life. He takes a collaborative and solution-oriented approach to negotiation, striving to not only resolve the immediate dispute but also reduce the likelihood of future conflict. He believes that thoughtful, strategic advocacy can help clients move forward with greater stability and clarity.
Outside of his legal practice, Patrick enjoys biking, with a particular passion for mountain biking and exploring new trails.
He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and his law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2013.
